Hutcherson also sought work outside the franchise frame. The Kids Are All Right, in which he played Laser, was an acclaimed ensemble film that received major awards attention. Detention, Escobar: Paradise Lost, The Forger, The Disaster Artist, Burn, and Across the River and Into the Trees show a willingness to move among comedy, crime, independent film, and literary adaptation. On television, Future Man gave him a long-form comic lead as Josh Futturman, a janitor and gamer pulled into a time-travel mission; the series leaned into absurdity and genre parody rather than the earnestness of his best-known film role.

In the 2020s, Hutcherson reached another large audience with Five Nights at Freddy's, playing Mike Schmidt in the film adaptation of the popular game franchise. The movie's success connected him with a new generation of horror and gaming fans, while the announced sequel continued that chapter of his career.
