Tobey Maguire is an American actor and producer best known worldwide for playing Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, a performance that helped define the modern superhero blockbuster. Born Tobias Vincent Maguire in Santa Monica, California, in 1975, he began acting as a child and teenager, working through commercials, television, and small film parts before becoming one of the most recognizable screen actors of the early 2000s.
Maguire’s early career was marked by a quiet, inward quality that made him useful to filmmakers interested in sensitive or uneasy young men. After television work and supporting roles, he drew attention in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm and in Pleasantville, where his contained performance fit a story about repression, nostalgia, and social awakening. He then appeared in The Cider House Rules, a major prestige drama, further establishing himself as an actor whose stillness could carry emotional weight.
His career changed dramatically with Spider-Man in 2002. Raimi’s film required Maguire to make Peter Parker believable both as an awkward Queens student and as a costumed hero negotiating grief, romance, responsibility, and public myth. Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were enormous commercial successes and became touchstones for later comic-book cinema; Maguire returned for Spider-Man 3 and, years later, reprised the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where his appearance connected multiple generations of the character’s screen history.
Maguire did not limit himself to superhero work. He starred in Seabiscuit as jockey Red Pollard, in The Good German for Steven Soderbergh, and in Brothers as a traumatized soldier returning from captivity, a performance that earned a Golden Globe nomination. In The Great Gatsby he played Nick Carraway, serving as the observer and narrator through Baz Luhrmann’s stylized adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald. He has often been cast as men whose polite surfaces conceal fear, ambition, or damage, a trait also used in later projects such as Pawn Sacrifice and Babylon.

As a producer, Maguire expanded his role behind the camera. He was associated with films including 25th Hour and Seabiscuit and later founded Material Pictures, which developed and produced projects including Pawn Sacrifice and Babylon. That producer work reflects a quieter second phase of his career: less constant as a screen presence than during the Spider-Man years, but still tied to director-driven films and projects built around strong literary, historical, or Hollywood subjects. Maguire’s legacy remains anchored in Peter Parker, yet his broader filmography shows a performer drawn to vulnerability, watchfulness, and characters caught between private anxiety and public expectation.
