J.K. Simmons

The central turning point in Simmons's awards profile was Whiplash. As Terence Fletcher, a brutal jazz instructor who uses intimidation and humiliation in pursuit of musical greatness, Simmons gave a performance that was both controlled and terrifying. The role won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with major honors from BAFTA, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild, and critics' groups. The award did not create his career, which was already long and respected, but it transformed him from beloved character actor into an Oscar-winning performer recognized internationally.
