Ryan Reynolds is a Canadian and American actor, producer and entrepreneur known for comic roles, action films and the Deadpool franchise. Born Ryan Rodney Reynolds on 23 October 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, he began acting as a teenager and developed from Canadian television work into a Hollywood leading-man career marked by self-aware comedy, physical action and frequent producing involvement.
Reynolds was raised in Vancouver and attended Kitsilano Secondary School. He began acting at about thirteen and took early parts in Canadian and American television. His first major screen role was Billy Simpson in the teen series Hillside, shown in the United States as Fifteen. He later appeared in programmes including The Odyssey, The X-Files and The Outer Limits, and had early film work in Ordinary Magic. After a period of uncertainty about acting, he moved to Los Angeles and continued pursuing roles.
His American television breakthrough came with the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl, in which he played Michael “Berg” Bergen from 1998 to 2001. The role showcased his timing in fast, verbal comedy and helped lead to film opportunities. Reynolds' early film career included comedies such as National Lampoon's Van Wilder, Waiting... and Just Friends, while he also took action and horror roles in Blade: Trinity, The Amityville Horror and Smokin' Aces. These projects established him as a performer comfortable with both wisecracking comedy and physically demanding genre work.
During the late 2000s and early 2010s, Reynolds moved between romantic comedy, drama and superhero films. The Proposal, opposite Sandra Bullock, became one of his most commercially successful pre-Deadpool releases. He also appeared in Adventureland, Buried, Safe House and Woman in Gold. His first appearances in comic-book adaptations were unevenly received: he played Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the title role in Green Lantern. The latter film was a high-profile disappointment, but Reynolds later turned that setback into part of the public humour surrounding his career.

Reynolds' defining commercial success came with Deadpool in 2016. He had advocated for a screen version closer to the character's comic-book tone and starred as the irreverent mercenary Wade Wilson. The film became a major box-office hit and earned Reynolds a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy. He returned for Deadpool 2 in 2018 and Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, with the series cementing his association with self-referential superhero comedy and R-rated action.
Outside Deadpool, Reynolds has continued to star in and produce mainstream entertainment. His credits include the science-fiction horror film Life, the action films 6 Underground and Red Notice, the video-game-themed comedy Free Guy, and the time-travel adventure The Adam Project. He has also performed voice roles in animated and family films, including The Croods, Turbo and Pokémon Detective Pikachu. In many later projects, Reynolds' screen persona has combined sarcasm, vulnerability and rapid comic delivery.
Reynolds has also become known for business and media ventures. He has held ownership interests in Aviation American Gin and Mint Mobile and is a co-owner of Wrexham A.F.C., the Welsh football club documented in the television series Welcome to Wrexham. That series won Primetime Emmy Awards, adding to Reynolds' public profile beyond acting. He was named to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in 2017, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has been appointed to Canadian and British Columbian orders of honour.
Reynolds was previously married to actress Scarlett Johansson and has been married to actress Blake Lively since 2012; they have four children. By the mid-2020s he was one of the most commercially prominent Canadian actors of his generation, with a career spanning television comedy, romantic films, action spectacles, voice acting, production and business ventures.
