Acting
Johnny Depp is an American actor, musician, producer, and occasional director whose screen image has been built around eccentric outsiders, stylized transformations, and collaborations with visually distinctive filmmakers. Born John Christopher Depp II on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, he grew up in Florida and first pursued music, playing guitar in bands before moving to Los Angeles. Acting began almost accidentally through industry contacts, but his film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street and later work in Platoon placed him on a path that soon overtook his music ambitions.
Depp became nationally famous as Officer Tom Hanson on the television series 21 Jump Street. The show made him a teen idol, a label he resisted by seeking film roles that were stranger, riskier, or less conventionally heroic. That instinct defined his early film career. With Edward Scissorhands, he began a long creative partnership with Tim Burton and established a screen persona based on physical detail, melancholy, and stylized otherness. Through the 1990s he chose films such as Benny & Joon, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Ed Wood, Don Juan DeMarco, Dead Man, Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, and The Ninth Gate, building a reputation as a leading actor drawn to oddballs, dreamers, criminals, and misfits.
The commercial center of Depp's career changed dramatically with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. His performance as Captain Jack Sparrow mixed silent-film body language, rock-star swagger, and comic unpredictability, turning a theme-park adaptation into a major franchise and earning him an Academy Award nomination. He played Sparrow across multiple sequels and became one of the most recognizable film stars in the world. During the same era he received further Oscar nominations for Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, winning a Golden Globe for Sweeney Todd.

Depp's filmography also includes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Public Enemies, Alice in Wonderland, Rango, Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Black Mass, Murder on the Orient Express, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Minamata, and Jeanne du Barry. His recurring collaborators have included Burton, Gore Verbinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, while his performances often rely on voice, costume, gesture, and makeup as central tools rather than surface additions.
Outside acting, Depp has continued to work as a musician, including with Hollywood Vampires alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, and has produced films through Infinitum Nihil. His public career has also been affected by highly publicized litigation and personal controversy, which changed his relationship with major studios during the 2020s. As a film figure, however, his influence remains clear: he helped make offbeat character work commercially viable at blockbuster scale, and his Jack Sparrow became one of the defining screen creations of early-21st-century popular cinema.
