Timothy Olyphant

Timothy Olyphant is an American actor known for dry wit, laconic authority, and a screen presence that has made him especially memorable in westerns, crime stories, action films, and offbeat comedies. Born Timothy David Olyphant on May 20, 1968, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he grew up in Modesto, California, and studied fine arts at the University of Southern California. Before becoming widely known on television, he trained as an actor in New York and began his professional career on stage. His off-Broadway debut in The Monogamist in 1995 brought him a Theatre World Award, and he followed it by originating the stage adaptation of David Sedaris's The Santaland Diaries.

Olyphant moved into film during the late 1990s, often making a sharp impression in supporting roles. Scream 2, Go, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Broken Hearts Club, A Man Apart, and The Girl Next Door established him as a performer who could make charming, dangerous, or morally slippery characters feel relaxed and specific rather than generic. He also took leading or major roles in Catch and Release, Hitman, A Perfect Getaway, The Crazies, and Live Free or Die Hard, where he played cyber-terrorist Thomas Gabriel opposite Bruce Willis.

His defining television breakthrough came as Seth Bullock in HBO's Deadwood. The role fit Olyphant's gift for controlled intensity: Bullock was principled, volatile, and often silent until action became unavoidable. He later reprised the part in Deadwood: The Movie. Olyphant reached an even broader audience as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens in FX's Justified, based on Elmore Leonard's writing. His performance blended old-fashioned lawman cool with humor, vanity, and personal damage, earning him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2011.
