Margaret Qualley is an American actress whose work combines a dancer's physical precision with a willingness to take on emotionally exposed and offbeat screen roles. Born Sarah Margaret Qualley on October 23, 1994, in Kalispell, Montana, she is the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley. She trained seriously in ballet as a teenager, studying at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and later in New York, before deciding that a professional dance career was not the path she wanted. Modeling followed briefly, but acting soon became her focus.
Qualley made her feature-film debut in Gia Coppola's Palo Alto and gained wider notice as Jill Garvey on HBO's The Leftovers. That series gave her an early showcase in a demanding ensemble drama, and she quickly built a résumé that balanced independent films with larger productions. Her film work in the late 2010s included The Nice Guys, Death Note, Novitiate, IO, Native Son, Donnybrook, and Seberg. She reached a much broader audience in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood as Pussycat, a magnetic and unnerving member of the Manson-era counterculture orbit depicted in the film.
Television also became a major part of her reputation. In Fosse/Verdon, Qualley played dancer and choreographer Ann Reinking, a role that made use of her dance background and earned major awards attention. Her most substantial early lead came with Netflix's Maid, adapted from Stephanie Land's memoir. As Alex, a young mother trying to escape abuse and poverty while working as a cleaner, Qualley carried the miniseries through intimate, physically grounded work that was widely praised and brought Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Qualley's later choices emphasized collaboration with distinctive filmmakers. She appeared in Claire Denis's Stars at Noon, led the chamber thriller Sanctuary opposite Christopher Abbott, and joined Yorgos Lanthimos's repertory-like company for Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness. In 2024, she co-starred with Demi Moore in Coralie Fargeat's body-horror satire The Substance, playing Sue, the younger alter ego created by a dangerous rejuvenation procedure. The role placed Qualley at the center of one of the year's most discussed genre films and brought another wave of awards recognition. She has also worked in video games, notably in Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, and continues to move between independent drama, dark comedy, stylized genre work, and prestige television.
Her early dance training remains visible even when she is not playing dancers. Qualley's performances often depend on posture, abrupt changes in energy, and a sense of physical unease; that quality suited Fosse/Verdon, but it also shaped the restless vulnerability of Maid and the stylized extremity of The Substance. She has frequently played young women under pressure from systems or fantasies that try to define them: celebrity mythology in Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, economic precarity in Maid, desire and control in Sanctuary, and bodily perfection in The Substance.
Qualley has also become associated with filmmakers who favor tonal risk. Working with Quentin Tarantino, Claire Denis, Ethan Coen, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Coralie Fargeat placed her in projects that mix comedy, violence, erotic tension, or surrealism rather than conventional star vehicles. That has made her career feel less linear than many actors of her generation: she moves from streaming melodrama to arthouse provocation, from supporting turns to demanding leads, and from screen acting to performance-capture and voice-related work. The through-line is a preference for roles that let her seem both delicate and unpredictable. References:
