Will Ferrell

Ferrell's career has also included more restrained or unusual performances. In Stranger than Fiction he played an IRS auditor who discovers his life may be narrated by a novelist, showing a quieter and more vulnerable side. He appeared in Melinda and Melinda, Everything Must Go, Downhill, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Spirited, Barbie, and the documentary-style road film Will & Harper. These projects broadened his work beyond the man-child comedies with which he is often associated.

As a producer, Ferrell has had a major influence on comedy beyond his own acting. With Adam McKay, he co-founded Gary Sanchez Productions, which produced films, television, and online comedy. The pair also helped create Funny or Die, a web platform that became an important outlet for short-form comedy in the late 2000s. Ferrell has received multiple Emmy Awards as a producer, including for work connected to live television specials and comedy programming, and he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2011.

Ferrell's comedy depends on more than loudness, although he can be brilliantly loud. His best performances are built on commitment to a flawed internal logic: Ron Burgundy thinks he is a statesman, Buddy the Elf thinks joy is a duty, Ricky Bobby thinks speed is destiny, and Brennan Huff in Step Brothers treats adolescent insecurity like epic tragedy. By refusing to wink at the audience too soon, Ferrell lets foolishness grow until it becomes oddly human. That quality has made him one of the defining American comic performers of his era.
