Dakota Fanning is an American actress who became famous as a child performer and then built an adult career across film, television and independent drama. Born Hannah Dakota Fanning on February 23, 1994, in Conyers, Georgia, she began acting very young, first in commercials and television guest roles before film work made her one of the most visible child actors of the early 2000s. Her younger sister, Elle Fanning, also became an actress, but Dakota's own career developed first through unusually mature performances opposite major adult stars.
Fanning's breakthrough came with I Am Sam, in which she played Lucy, the daughter of Sean Penn's character. The role brought a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination when she was still a child and established her reputation for emotional control beyond her years. She followed it with Steven Spielberg's television miniseries Taken, Uptown Girls, The Cat in the Hat, Man on Fire and Hide and Seek. In War of the Worlds, she played Rachel Ferrier opposite Tom Cruise, giving one of the defining child performances in a large-scale Spielberg thriller. Around the same period she also voiced animated characters, including the title role in Coraline and Lilo in Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch.
As she aged out of child-star roles, Fanning chose a mixture of commercial projects and more adult independent films. She appeared as Jane in The Twilight Saga, played Cherie Currie in The Runaways, and took on dramatic roles in Now Is Good, Night Moves, Effie Gray, American Pastoral and Brimstone. These projects helped move her screen identity away from precocious child actor and toward more complex young-adult characters, often women navigating pressure, danger or self-definition.

In later work, Fanning continued alternating between film and television. She appeared in Ocean's 8, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, The Equalizer 3 and The Watchers, and had major television roles in The Alienist, The First Lady, The Perfect Couple and Ripley. Her career is notable for continuity: she did not disappear after childhood fame, but instead kept working through the difficult transition into adult roles. Across more than two decades, Fanning has remained recognizable for clear diction, composure and a controlled intensity that made her stand out as a child and has continued to serve her in thrillers, period dramas and contemporary ensemble work.
