Biography
Sam Rockwell is an American actor whose career has moved between independent film, studio comedy, prestige drama, animation, television, and Broadway. Born in Daly City, California, in 1968 and raised partly in New York and San Francisco, he became known for a loose, unpredictable screen presence: funny, abrasive, vulnerable, and often deliberately off-center. That combination made him a distinctive character actor long before major awards made him a household name.
Rockwell worked steadily through the 1990s, building a résumé from guest television roles and small film parts into memorable supporting performances. He stood out in Galaxy Quest as Guy Fleegman, in The Green Mile as the volatile prisoner “Wild Bill” Wharton, and in Charlie’s Angels as Eric Knox. His breakthrough as a lead came with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, George Clooney’s film about television host Chuck Barris, a role that won him the Silver Bear for Best Actor at Berlin and helped establish him as more than a scene-stealing supporting player.
During the 2000s and early 2010s, Rockwell became closely associated with roles that mixed nervous energy with melancholy. Moon gave him one of his purest showcases, carrying much of Duncan Jones’s science-fiction drama as an isolated lunar worker confronting questions of identity and loneliness. He also appeared in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Frost/Nixon, Iron Man 2, Cowboys & Aliens, Seven Psychopaths, and The Way Way Back, often bringing warmth or danger to characters who could have been simple comic relief or villains.
