Monica Bellucci is an Italian actress and model whose career moved from European fashion into international cinema without losing its multilingual, cross-border character. Born Monica Anna Maria Bellucci on September 30, 1964, in Città di Castello, Umbria, she first became known as a fashion model, working in Milan and Paris and appearing for major fashion houses before shifting fully toward acting. That background gave her early screen image a striking visual presence, but her long career has depended on a willingness to work across Italian, French, American and other European productions.
Bellucci's acting career began in Italian television and film before she reached wider international audiences. Francis Ford Coppola cast her as one of Dracula's brides in Bram Stoker's Dracula, and her profile rose sharply with The Apartment, which brought her a César Award nomination, and with Giuseppe Tornatore's Malèna, where she played a woman whose beauty and isolation expose the cruelty of a wartime Sicilian town. In Gaspar Noé's Irréversible, she took on a notorious and emotionally punishing role in a film that remains controversial for its form and violence.
During the 2000s, Bellucci became familiar to global audiences through a sequence of high-profile genre and art-house films. She played Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ, and appeared in Brotherhood of the Wolf, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, The Brothers Grimm and Shoot 'Em Up. These roles show the unusual range of her screen career: prestige drama, French popular comedy, Hollywood science fiction, biblical epic, action cinema and European auteur work.

Bellucci continued to work prominently into the 2010s and 2020s. In Spectre she appeared as Lucia Sciarra, becoming one of the oldest actresses to play a Bond woman in the film series. She later acted in On the Milky Road, The Man Who Sold His Skin, Mafia Mamma and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. On stage, she performed in Letters and Memoirs, a production based on Maria Callas's writings, extending her work beyond screen acting. Bellucci's public image has often focused on glamour, but her filmography is more varied than that label suggests: she has been a model, international star, character presence, stage performer and a recurring link between European art cinema and mainstream global film.
