Djimon Hounsou

Djimon Gaston Hounsou is a Beninese-American actor and former model whose career has been defined by physical presence, emotional intensity and major supporting roles in historical drama, action franchises and fantasy films. He was born in Cotonou, then part of Dahomey and now Benin, on 24 April 1964. As a teenager he moved to France, where he experienced hardship before entering fashion modelling after being encouraged by designer Thierry Mugler. Music videos for artists including Janet Jackson, Madonna, Paula Abdul and Tina Turner helped bring him before cameras before his film career began.

Hounsou's early screen work included Without You I'm Nothing, television guest parts and the science-fiction film Stargate. His breakthrough came with Steven Spielberg's Amistad, in which he played Cinqué, the Mende man who leads a revolt on a slave ship and becomes central to a landmark legal case. The performance brought him a Golden Globe nomination and established him as an actor capable of carrying historical drama with force and dignity. He followed it with the role of Juba in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, another internationally visible part that used his stillness and gravitas within a large ensemble.

In the 2000s Hounsou became one of the most prominent African-born actors in Hollywood. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for In America and Blood Diamond. In both films he brought emotional weight to roles shaped by displacement, family and survival. In America used his gentleness and grief as a counterpoint to the immigrant-family story around him, while Blood Diamond placed him at the moral center of a thriller about war, exploitation and parenthood. He also appeared in Constantine, The Island and Push, and worked in French-language action drama with Special Forces.
