Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner was an American actor, filmmaker, producer, and political activist whose career bridged classic television comedy and some of the most enduring American studio films of the 1980s and 1990s. Born Robert Reiner in the Bronx, New York, on 6 March 1947, he was the son of comedian, writer, actor, and director Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner. Raised in a show-business family, Reiner moved between performance, writing, and directing from an early age, eventually developing a career that made him recognizable both in front of the camera and behind it.

Reiner first became nationally famous as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark sitcom All in the Family. The role placed him at the center of one of American television’s defining debates over politics, generational change, class, prejudice, and family life. His performance earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Although that character could easily have defined his entire public identity, Reiner used the visibility of television success as a platform for a broader filmmaking career.

His directorial debut, This Is Spinal Tap, helped establish the modern mockumentary as a durable comic form. He followed it with a remarkable run of films across genres: Stand by Me, a coming-of-age drama adapted from Stephen King; The Princess Bride, a fantasy adventure that became a long-running cult favorite; When Harry Met Sally..., one of the central romantic comedies of its era; Misery, an acclaimed thriller that won Kathy Bates an Academy Award; and A Few Good Men, a legal drama nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The range of those films—satire, youth drama, romance, suspense, courtroom drama—made Reiner one of the most commercially successful and versatile American directors of his generation.
