Paul Rudd is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer known for an affable screen presence that works equally well in romantic comedy, ensemble farce, independent drama, and superhero spectacle. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, and raised in Kansas, he studied theatre at the University of Kansas and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before establishing himself on television and film in the early 1990s. His breakout film role came as Josh in Clueless, Amy Heckerling's 1995 update of Jane Austen's Emma. The performance made him a recognizable romantic-comedy lead and introduced the relaxed, self-deprecating quality that would become central to his appeal.
Rudd built a varied career in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He appeared in films such as Romeo + Juliet, The Object of My Affection, The Cider House Rules, Wet Hot American Summer, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. His role as Brian Fantana in Anchorman became one of several memorable turns in absurdist ensemble comedy. Around the same time, he became familiar to television audiences through a recurring role on Friends as Mike Hannigan, Phoebe Buffay's eventual husband. Those projects positioned him as a performer who could support a large ensemble without losing his own comic identity.
His collaborations with Judd Apatow and related comedy circles deepened that reputation. The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Role Models, I Love You, Man, Wanderlust, and This Is 40 showcased his ability to play decent but flawed men navigating embarrassment, friendship, marriage, arrested development, and ordinary insecurity. Rudd often finds comedy in understatement rather than aggression. Even when the joke is broad, his characters tend to seem human rather than cartoonish, which has helped many of his performances age well with audiences.

A major later chapter began when Rudd joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Scott Lang, the reformed thief and reluctant hero Ant-Man. Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brought him to a global franchise audience while preserving the comic modesty of his persona. He also contributed to the screenplay of the first two Ant-Man films, reflecting his long-standing involvement in shaping comic material. Outside Marvel, he continued to appear in projects including The Fundamentals of Caring, The Catcher Was a Spy, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Only Murders in the Building, and Living with Yourself.
Rudd's durability comes from range that is easy to underestimate. He can be a romantic lead, deadpan absurdist, anxious husband, action-comedy hero, or dramatic everyman without seeming to switch brands. In 2021 People named him Sexiest Man Alive, a pop-cultural honor that fit his public image as approachable and lightly amused by celebrity itself. His career has remained unusually steady because his persona is elastic: charming but not slick, funny but not cruel, recognizable but rarely overbearing.
