Stephen Root

Stephen Root is an American actor and voice performer whose career has been built on unusually precise character work across sitcoms, prestige television, studio comedies, independent film, animation, and drama. Born in Sarasota, Florida, and educated at the University of Florida, Root moved from stage and regional work into screen roles during the 1980s and became one of the most recognizable supporting actors of his generation. Rather than being associated with a single genre, he has become known for disappearing into anxious office workers, eccentrics, comic authority figures, lawyers, politicians, bureaucrats, and morally ambiguous operators.

Root first reached a broad television audience as eccentric station owner Jimmy James on the NBC ensemble comedy NewsRadio. The role made use of his dry timing and ability to make odd behavior feel both heightened and oddly plausible. Soon afterward, he created one of his defining film characters as Milton Waddams in Mike Judge's Office Space, a soft-spoken, resentful employee whose mumbling frustration became one of the film's enduring comic signatures. Root's connection with Judge also extended to animation: he voiced Bill Dauterive and other characters on King of the Hill, showing the same gift for vulnerable comic detail through voice alone.

In film, Root has been a frequent presence in projects by major American directors. His credits include the Coen brothers films O Brother, Where Art Thou?, The Ladykillers, No Country for Old Men, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and The Tragedy of Macbeth, as well as roles in DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story, Idiocracy, Cedar Rapids, Selma, Trumbo, Get Out, On the Basis of Sex, To Leslie, and many others. These performances are often compact but memorable: Root specializes in characters who sharpen a scene's social texture, whether by providing comic disruption, quiet menace, or institutional weight.
