Arnold Schwarzenegger

Schwarzenegger's most enduring screen role arrived in James Cameron's The Terminator in 1984, in which his physical presence and minimal dialogue helped create one of modern cinema's best-known science-fiction characters. He reprised the role in Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate. The success of the franchise made him closely associated with high-concept action cinema and with catchphrases that became part of popular culture.

During the peak of his film career, Schwarzenegger starred in a run of commercially successful action films, including Commando, The Running Man, Predator, Red Heat, Total Recall, Last Action Hero, Eraser, and True Lies. He also developed a parallel career in comedy, notably through Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Junior, and Jingle All the Way. These films broadened his appeal beyond action audiences and showed a willingness to play against his imposing screen image. By the 1990s, he was one of Hollywood's highest-profile stars and was often discussed alongside Sylvester Stallone as a central figure in American action cinema.

Schwarzenegger also held public fitness roles before elected office. President George H. W. Bush appointed him chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 1990, and he later chaired California's Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. A Republican, he entered electoral politics during California's 2003 recall election, running to replace Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger won the recall contest and was sworn in on November 17, 2003, then won a full term in 2006.

As governor, Schwarzenegger pursued a political profile that combined fiscal conservatism, infrastructure investment, and high-profile environmental policy. The National Governors Association credits his administration with signing landmark greenhouse-gas reduction legislation in 2006, increasing the minimum wage, lowering unemployment during part of his tenure, and overhauling workers' compensation. He also promoted a Strategic Growth Plan aimed at transportation and infrastructure improvements. His governorship ended in January 2011 because of term limits, after which he returned to acting and public advocacy.

Following his time in office, Schwarzenegger resumed screen work in films such as The Expendables series, The Last Stand, Escape Plan, Sabotage, Maggie, Terminator Genisys, Aftermath, and Terminator: Dark Fate. He also expanded into streaming television, starring in the action-comedy series FUBAR and appearing in documentary and nonfiction projects about his life and career. TMDb lists more than 240 known credits connected to his acting and screen appearances.

Schwarzenegger was married to journalist and author Maria Shriver from 1986 until their divorce was finalized in 2021; they have four children together, and he also has a son, Joseph Baena. Beyond entertainment and politics, he has remained active in fitness promotion, environmental advocacy, and public commentary. His career is unusual in its movement across bodybuilding, global movie stardom, state governorship, and later media entrepreneurship, making him one of the most recognizable public figures to emerge from twentieth-century popular culture.
