Biography

Ron Perlman is an American actor whose career has moved between stage-trained character work, elaborate creature makeup, genre film, prestige television, animation, and video games. Born Ronald N. Perlman in New York City on April 14, 1950, he studied at Lehman College and earned an MFA from the University of Minnesota. His build, gravelly voice, and willingness to disappear under prosthetics made him a distinctive screen presence, but his best-known roles also depend on emotional directness: outsiders, bruisers, monsters, soldiers, and weary men with a streak of humor or melancholy.

Perlman began working professionally in the 1970s and gained early international attention in Jean-Jacques Annaud's prehistoric drama Quest for Fire, followed by another Annaud film, The Name of the Rose. In the late 1980s he became widely recognizable on television as Vincent, the leonine romantic lead opposite Linda Hamilton in Beauty and the Beast. The role required both heavy makeup and a gentle, literate performance, and it brought Perlman a Golden Globe Award. That success established a pattern that continued throughout his career: he often played physically imposing or visually unusual figures without treating them as mere effects.

A central creative partnership in Perlman's film work has been with Guillermo del Toro. After appearing in del Toro's Cronos, Perlman became one of the filmmaker's recurring actors, later appearing in Blade II, Pacific Rim, Nightmare Alley, and the stop-motion feature Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. Their most famous collaboration was Hellboy, in which Perlman played Mike Mignola's demonic comic-book hero as a cigar-chomping, blue-collar romantic with a dry wit and a wounded sense of destiny. He returned for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, deepening the character's mix of spectacle, comedy, and pathos.
