Ben Affleck

After Good Will Hunting, Affleck became a studio leading man. He starred in Armageddon, one of the biggest commercial hits of 1998, and later appeared in films such as Shakespeare in Love, Boiler Room, Pearl Harbor, Changing Lanes, The Sum of All Fears, Daredevil, and Hollywoodland. His early-2000s career included both major successes and widely criticized projects, but Hollywoodland, in which he played actor George Reeves, helped reframe him as a performer capable of more mature character work and earned him notable awards attention.

Affleck's second major career phase came as a director. His feature directing debut, Gone Baby Gone, was released in 2007 and adapted Dennis Lehane's Boston crime novel into a tense moral drama starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris. He followed it with The Town in 2010, directing, co-writing, and starring in another Boston-set crime film. The Town was a commercial and critical success and confirmed that Affleck's directing career was not a side project but a central part of his artistic identity.

His greatest directing and producing triumph came with Argo in 2012. Affleck directed, produced, and starred in the political thriller, which dramatized a CIA rescue operation during the Iran hostage crisis. Argo won the Academy Award for best picture, as well as major awards from BAFTA and the Golden Globes, and Affleck won best-director honors from several organizations. Although he was not nominated for the Academy Award for best director, the film's success made him one of the most prominent actor-directors of his generation.

Affleck has continued to alternate between acting, directing, producing, and franchise roles. He starred in David Fincher's Gone Girl, played Batman/Bruce Wayne in DC Extended Universe films including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, and appeared in The Accountant, Triple Frontier, The Way Back, The Last Duel, and The Tender Bar. In The Way Back, he played a former basketball player and coach dealing with alcoholism, a role widely noted for its emotional closeness to themes he has discussed publicly.

As a filmmaker, Affleck has often returned to questions of loyalty, public identity, moral compromise, and institutional power. Air, released in 2023, continued his partnership with Matt Damon through their production company work and dramatized the business story behind Nike's pursuit of Michael Jordan. Affleck also co-founded the Eastern Congo Initiative, an advocacy and grantmaking nonprofit, and has been involved in political and humanitarian causes.

Affleck's public life has sometimes drawn intense media attention, but his film career is best understood as unusually resilient. He moved from child actor to Oscar-winning writer, from blockbuster star to criticized celebrity, from comeback performer to best-picture-winning producer-director, and then into franchise and character work. His most important credits include Good Will Hunting, Armageddon, Hollywoodland, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Argo, Gone Girl, The Accountant, The Way Back, and Air.
