Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, author, and Vietnam War veteran whose films helped define the political and historical cinema of the late twentieth century. Born William Oliver Stone on September 15, 1946, in New York City, he grew up between the United States and France, briefly attended Yale University, and later enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He served in Vietnam as an infantryman, was wounded, and received decorations including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. That experience became central to his imagination as a filmmaker, shaping his recurring interest in war, power, trauma, memory, and the gap between official narratives and lived experience.

After returning from military service, Stone studied film at New York University, where Martin Scorsese was among his teachers. He first made his mark as a screenwriter. Midnight Express won him the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and he also wrote or co-wrote films including Conan the Barbarian and Scarface. His breakthrough as a director came in the mid-1980s with Salvador and Platoon. Platoon, drawn from his Vietnam experience, won the Academy Award for Best Picture and brought Stone the Oscar for Best Director. He returned to the war and its aftermath with Born on the Fourth of July, for which he won a second Best Director Oscar, and later completed a Vietnam trilogy with Heaven & Earth.

Stone's films often combine aggressive visual style with historical argument. Wall Street turned Gordon Gekko into an enduring symbol of 1980s financial excess. The Doors explored rock mythology; JFK used a dense collage of formats and perspectives to dramatize doubt about the Kennedy assassination; Natural Born Killers attacked media spectacle through satire and visual overload; Nixon examined political ambition and paranoia; Any Given Sunday turned professional football into a study of capitalism, ego, and bodily risk. Later work included W., Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Snowden, and a series of documentaries and interviews about political figures and global affairs.
