At the same time, Williams became a major family-film star. His performance as the Genie in Disney's Aladdin reshaped expectations for celebrity voice acting in animation, while Mrs. Doubtfire turned his gift for disguise, voices and sentiment into a huge popular success. He later appeared in Jumanji, Hook, Flubber, Robots, Happy Feet and the Night at the Museum films, often bringing manic comic energy to stories built around fantasy, childhood and wonder.

Williams won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting, playing therapist Sean Maguire opposite Matt Damon. The role is one of his most understated performances, centered on grief, patience and compassion rather than comic fireworks. He also won Golden Globe, Emmy, Grammy and Screen Actors Guild honors across comedy, film, television and spoken-word performance, reflecting the breadth of his career.

His darker roles were equally important. In One Hour Photo he played a lonely photo technician whose obsession becomes threatening, and in Insomnia he gave a controlled performance as a crime writer implicated in murder. These films complicated his public image and showed that the warmth audiences associated with him could be inverted into unease.

Williams died on 11 August 2014. After his death, public discussion included his diagnosis with Lewy body dementia, a neurodegenerative disease that helped explain symptoms he had experienced late in life. Documentaries and tributes since then have emphasized both the joy he gave audiences and the seriousness of his craft. His legacy is unusually broad: stand-up innovator, sitcom phenomenon, Oscar-winning dramatic actor, family-film icon and a performer whose speed often masked extraordinary precision.
