John Turturro

John Turturro is an American actor, writer, director, and producer known for a wide range of film, television, and stage work. Born John Michael Turturro on February 28, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up in an Italian American family and trained seriously for the stage before becoming one of the most distinctive screen actors of his generation. He earned a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale School of Drama, a foundation that helped support his long career in both character roles and leading parts.

Turturro began appearing onscreen in the early 1980s, including a small role in Raging Bull, while also building a reputation in theater. His film breakthrough came in Five Corners and then through work with Spike Lee, who cast him in Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Clockers, Girl 6, He Got Game, Summer of Sam, She Hate Me, and Miracle at St. Anna. That continuing collaboration showed Turturro's skill at playing volatile, comic, anxious, and morally complicated characters without flattening them into caricature.

Another central thread in his career is his work with Joel and Ethan Coen. Turturro appeared in Miller's Crossing and then gave a career-defining lead performance as playwright Barton Fink in Barton Fink, for which he won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor. He later played Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski and Pete Hogwallop in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, roles that became especially memorable in modern American cinema. His broader film career also includes Quiz Show, Fearless, Rounders, Mr. Deeds, Secret Window, The Taking of Pelham 123, Gloria Bell, The Room Next Door, and the Transformers series as Seymour Simmons.
