Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, writer, editor, podcaster, and comic-book commentator whose career began with one of the signature independent-film success stories of the 1990s. Born Kevin Patrick Smith in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 2, 1970, he grew up in Highlands and developed the pop-culture obsessions—comic books, Star Wars, genre movies, retail life, and New Jersey local color—that later became the raw material for much of his work.

Smith's breakthrough was Clerks, a black-and-white comedy made on a tiny budget and set largely in and around the convenience store where he had worked. He wrote, directed, co-produced, edited, and appeared in the film as Silent Bob opposite Jason Mewes as Jay. Clerks premiered in the independent-film circuit, won attention at Sundance, was distributed by Miramax, and became a defining example of talk-driven, low-budget American indie comedy. Its mixture of profane everyday conversation, pop-culture argument, and working-class boredom established Smith's voice almost immediately.

Several of Smith's next films formed the View Askewniverse, a loose continuity connected by recurring characters, New Jersey settings, and Jay and Silent Bob appearances. Mallrats moved toward studio teen comedy, Chasing Amy became his most critically admired early work with its blend of romance, sexuality, fandom, and male insecurity, and Dogma turned Catholic theology and irreverent fantasy into a broad ensemble comedy. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and Clerks III later returned to the characters and themes that made his reputation.
