Biography
Tilda Swinton is a Scottish actress whose career has linked experimental cinema, European art film, Hollywood franchises and major international auteurs. Born Katherine Matilda Swinton in London on 5 November 1960, she comes from the historic Scottish Swinton family and was educated at Cambridge, where she studied social and political sciences and began acting. Her screen identity has long been associated with transformation: androgynous, severe, comic, ethereal or unsettling depending on the role, but usually precise and unsentimental.
Swinton's film career began in close collaboration with Derek Jarman. She appeared in Caravaggio, The Last of England, War Requiem and The Garden, becoming one of the essential faces of Jarman's politically charged, visually radical cinema. Her performance as Isabella in Jarman's Edward II won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice, and Sally Potter's Orlando gave her an international breakthrough. As the centuries-spanning title character, Swinton's stillness, wit and ambiguity made the film a signature work of 1990s independent cinema.
Through the late 1990s and early 2000s she moved between independent and studio projects, including Female Perversions, The Beach, Vanilla Sky, Adaptation, Young Adam and Broken Flowers. The Deep End brought major American awards attention, while Michael Clayton brought her most widely recognized industry honor: the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing corporate lawyer Karen Crowder. The role showed how effectively Swinton could make control, panic and moral compromise coexist in one character.
