Wu Jing is a Chinese actor, martial artist, director, and producer whose career connects traditional screen fighting, Hong Kong action cinema, and the large-scale patriotic blockbusters that reshaped the Chinese box office in the 2010s. Born on 3 April 1974 in Beijing, he trained in martial arts from a young age and studied at Beijing Sport University. That athletic foundation made physical performance central to his screen identity from the beginning.
Wu first became known through martial-arts television and film roles in the 1990s and early 2000s. His early work included Tai Chi Boxer and a number of wuxia or action-oriented television dramas, including Legend of Dagger Lee and Eternity: A Chinese Ghost Story. He later moved more visibly into Hong Kong action cinema, where his speed and precision made him well suited to roles built around choreography rather than dialogue. SPL: Sha Po Lang, Fatal Contact, Invisible Target, and Shaolin helped establish him as an action performer who could play both heroic and dangerous figures.
A major shift came when Wu began directing and shaping his own action vehicles. Legendary Assassin marked an early step behind the camera, but Wolf Warrior in 2015 was the turning point. Wu directed and starred as Leng Feng, a Chinese special-forces soldier, creating a military action hero closely tied to national pride and modern Chinese popular cinema. The film was commercially successful, but its sequel changed the scale of his career.
Wolf Warrior 2 became one of the highest-grossing films in Chinese history and made Wu Jing a box-office phenomenon. As director, co-writer, and star, he fused hand-to-hand action, military spectacle, rescue narrative, and patriotic emotion into a film that reached a massive domestic audience. Its success altered perceptions of what a Chinese action blockbuster could earn and made Wu one of the industry's most commercially important figures.

Wu's next major box-office identity came through science fiction and war epics. In The Wandering Earth, he played Liu Peiqiang, an astronaut father whose sacrifice becomes central to the film's emotional and national stakes. The film became a landmark for Chinese science fiction cinema, and Wu returned for The Wandering Earth II. He also starred in The Battle at Lake Changjin and its sequel, large-scale Korean War films that became enormous domestic hits. These roles reinforced his association with stories of endurance, collective duty, and national survival.
At the same time, Wu has continued to work in more conventional action and adventure roles, including SPL 2: A Time for Consequences, The Climbers, Ride On, and Meg 2: The Trench. His collaboration with international genre cinema in Meg 2 placed him opposite Jason Statham and brought his action-star persona into a global franchise. He has also remained active as producer, director, writer, presenter, and executive producer on selected projects, especially those tied to the Wolf Warrior and Wandering Earth orbit.
Wu Jing's career is significant because it bridges several eras of Chinese-language screen action. He began in the lineage of martial-arts performers trained through discipline and choreography, matured in Hong Kong-style action cinema, and then became a defining figure of mainland China's blockbuster age. His films have been commercially powerful, culturally debated, and strongly associated with the changing ambitions of the Chinese film market.
As an actor, Wu's appeal depends on physical credibility and direct emotional conviction. As a filmmaker and producer, his importance lies in understanding action as a national-popular form: a way to combine spectacle, sacrifice, and identity for mass audiences. Whether admired chiefly for martial arts, box-office impact, or blockbuster authorship, he is one of the central Chinese film figures of the twenty-first century.
