Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes is an American actress, director, producer and writer, best known for playing Joey Potter on the television drama Dawson's Creek and for a film career that has moved between studio releases, independent dramas, thrillers and romantic comedies. Born Kate Noelle Holmes in Toledo, Ohio, in 1978, she began acting as a teenager and made her film debut in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm. Her breakthrough came soon afterward when Dawson's Creek premiered in 1998 and made her one of the most recognizable young performers on late-1990s American television.

Holmes's early screen career developed alongside Dawson's Creek. While the series was running, she appeared in films such as Disturbing Behavior, Go, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Wonder Boys, The Gift, Abandon and Phone Booth. These projects gave her a varied résumé: teen genre film, ensemble comedy, literary drama, supernatural thriller and suspense. Dawson's Creek remained the defining vehicle of her first period, but her film choices showed an effort to avoid being limited to one adolescent-screen image.

After Dawson's Creek ended in 2003, Holmes continued to take prominent film roles. She starred in Pieces of April, played the president's daughter in First Daughter, and reached a major blockbuster audience as Rachel Dawes in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins. She also appeared in Thank You for Smoking, Mad Money, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Jack and Jill, Miss Meadows, Woman in Gold, Touched with Fire, Logan Lucky, Dear Dictator, Coda, Brahms: The Boy II and The Secret: Dare to Dream. On television, she portrayed Jacqueline Kennedy in The Kennedys and later reprised the role in The Kennedys: After Camelot; she also appeared on Ray Donovan.
