Mickey Rourke

Rourke's film career became more erratic in the 1990s as he returned to boxing. He fought professionally for several years, and the physical cost of that period became part of the public story around him. He continued acting, but often in lower-profile or genre projects, before re-emerging in the 2000s through roles that used his weathered presence effectively. Robert Rodriguez's Sin City cast him as Marv, a brutal but strangely loyal figure whose stylized violence matched Rourke's comic-book physicality.

His definitive comeback came with Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. As Randy “The Ram” Robinson, an aging professional wrestler trying to keep working while his body and personal life collapse, Rourke delivered a performance widely read as a painful mirror of his own career. The role won him a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. It restored his standing as a serious dramatic actor and remains the central reference point for his later career.

After The Wrestler, Rourke appeared in a mix of studio films, action projects and independent work, including Iron Man 2, Immortals, The Expendables and numerous smaller thrillers. His filmography is uneven, but its best moments show a performer with rare emotional volatility and screen danger. Rourke's legacy rests not only on the comeback narrative but on the 1980s performances that made him a model of bruised masculinity and on The Wrestler, where that image was transformed into one of modern film's most affecting portraits of damage, pride and survival.
