Thomas James Kenny is an American actor and comedian best known as one of the most distinctive voice performers in modern animation. Born in Syracuse, New York, on 13 July 1962, he began as a stand-up comedian and sketch performer before becoming a central figure in animated television. His career is especially identified with SpongeBob SquarePants, but his body of work covers hundreds of characters across children's animation, adult animation, video games, feature films, and live-action comedy.
Kenny's early professional life included stand-up comedy and appearances on sketch series such as The Edge and Mr. Show with Bob and David. That background mattered: his voice acting is often built from comic rhythm, quick changes in pitch, and a willingness to make characters sound strange, nervous, joyous, or completely unhinged. Before SpongeBob became a cultural phenomenon, Kenny had already worked on series including Rocko's Modern Life, where he collaborated with creator Stephen Hillenburg, and he developed a reputation as a flexible performer for eccentric animated worlds.
His defining role began in 1999 when SpongeBob SquarePants premiered on Nickelodeon. Kenny voiced SpongeBob as an optimistic, high-energy sea sponge whose laugh, innocence, and emotional intensity became instantly recognizable. He also voiced Gary the Snail, the French Narrator, Patchy the Pirate in live-action segments, and many incidental characters. The series grew from a children's cartoon into a long-running global franchise with theatrical films, specials, merchandise, video games, and a Broadway musical. Kenny's performance is central to that endurance: SpongeBob works because the voice can be silly, sincere, manic, and vulnerable within the same scene.

Outside Bikini Bottom, Kenny has voiced the Ice King in Adventure Time, the Mayor and Narrator in The Powerpuff Girls, Dog in CatDog, Heffer Wolfe in Rocko's Modern Life, the Penguin in The Batman, Plastic Man in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Rabbit in Winnie the Pooh projects, and many roles in Futurama, Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack, Transformers Animated, and Rick and Morty. His credits show how often animation producers rely on him for characters who need comic specificity rather than generic voices.
Kenny has received major recognition from the animation industry, including Daytime Emmy Awards connected to his work as SpongeBob. Yet his importance is larger than awards. He helped give a long-running franchise its emotional center while also contributing to several major eras of American television animation, from 1990s cable cartoons to streaming-era revivals and specials.
His career demonstrates the craft of voice acting as character creation. Because his most famous role is so exuberant, it can obscure the range behind it, but Kenny's best work depends on precise timing, vocal texture, and the ability to make absurd characters feel lived-in. For many viewers, his voice is part of the sound of contemporary animation itself.
