Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian actor whose career moved from Hong Kong action cinema to international stardom and, eventually, an Academy Award for Best Actress. Born Yeoh Choo Kheng in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, she trained in dance in the United Kingdom before entering entertainment through pageants and screen work in Hong Kong. In the 1980s and 1990s she became one of the defining performers of Hong Kong action cinema, often credited as Michelle Khan in early international releases. Films such as Yes, Madam!, Police Story 3: Super Cop and Tai Chi Master displayed her athletic screen presence and willingness to perform demanding physical action at a time when few women were given comparable roles in the genre.
Yeoh’s profile widened globally with Tomorrow Never Dies, in which she played Wai Lin opposite Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond. The role introduced her to many Western viewers not simply as a supporting figure but as a fully capable action counterpart. She then reached a new level of international acclaim with Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, playing Yu Shu Lien. The film became a worldwide art-house and commercial success, and Yeoh’s performance combined martial-arts authority with restraint, melancholy and romantic tension.
In the years that followed, Yeoh built an unusually varied international career. She appeared in Memoirs of a Geisha, Sunshine, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Reign of Assassins, The Lady, Crazy Rich Asians, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, Last Christmas and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. She also became a visible part of major franchise television and streaming projects, including Star Trek: Discovery as Philippa Georgiou and the film Star Trek: Section 31. Voice and family-film credits such as Kung Fu Panda 2, Minions: The Rise of Gru and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts added to the range of her work.

Her landmark role came as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. The part drew on several phases of her career—physical comedy, action, family melodrama and emotional understatement—and won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first Asian woman to win that Oscar. Yeoh’s later work, including Wicked and Wicked: For Good as Madame Morrible, reflects her position as a global star whose career bridges Hong Kong cinema, Hollywood franchises, prestige drama and awards-recognized independent film.
