Will Smith

Smith's star image has often depended on a balance of discipline and likability. In action films he could play the wisecracking hero without seeming careless; in dramas he often leaned into determination, fatherhood, and self-belief. I Am Legend, Hancock, Seven Pounds, and later films such as Focus, Concussion, Suicide Squad, Collateral Beauty, Aladdin, Gemini Man, and Bad Boys for Life showed the range and unevenness of a career spent moving between franchise entertainment, effects-driven spectacle, and prestige drama.

King Richard brought Smith his most acclaimed dramatic role. Playing Richard Williams, father and coach of Venus and Serena Williams, he emphasized willpower, protectiveness, flaws, and strategy rather than simple inspirational uplift. The performance won the Academy Award for Best Actor, along with major precursor awards. The same Oscar ceremony became the setting for a major public controversy when Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock onstage after a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. At his best, he combines showmanship with emotional accessibility, making large-scale entertainment feel personal.
