Biography

Ed Harris is an American actor and filmmaker known for a career of intense, disciplined performances in drama, science fiction, political thrillers, westerns and prestige television. Born Edward Allen Harris in Englewood, New Jersey, on November 28, 1950, he grew up in Tenafly and first pursued athletics before committing to acting. After studying drama and graduating from the California Institute of the Arts, Harris began building a stage and screen career in the 1970s.

Harris's early film work included Coma and Borderline, but his profile rose sharply in the 1980s. George A. Romero's Knightriders gave him a leading role, and Philip Kaufman's The Right Stuff helped establish him as a commanding screen presence. He followed with varied work in Places in the Heart, Sweet Dreams and The Abyss, the latter pairing his physical intensity with emotional vulnerability in James Cameron's underwater science-fiction drama. By the early 1990s, Harris had become one of Hollywood's most reliable actors for characters with moral pressure, authority and inner conflict.

His 1990s run brought some of his most widely recognized work. Harris played NASA flight director Gene Kranz in Apollo 13, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor. He later earned another supporting nomination for The Truman Show, in which his Christof was both creator and jailer of a manufactured television world. Roles in Nixon, The Rock, Stepmom and other films showed his ability to move between major studio entertainment and awards-oriented drama without losing his grounded style.
