Brian Cox

Brian Cox is a Scottish actor whose career bridges classical theatre, independent film, Hollywood character work and prestige television. Born Brian Denis Cox on 1 June 1946 in Dundee, Scotland, he began acting as a teenager at Dundee Repertory Theatre, trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and became one of the founding members of the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh. Long before Succession made him a pop-cultural figure, Cox had already built a major reputation as a stage actor, especially in Shakespeare and modern drama.

Cox’s theatre career developed through repertory work, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre and major London stages. He won Laurence Olivier Awards for Rat in the Skull and Titus Andronicus, and his stage reputation rested on intellectual force, vocal command and a willingness to play power as something both charismatic and corrosive. His theatre background remained visible in later screen performances: even in small roles, Cox tends to create a full sense of history and motive around the character.

On film, Cox became known as one of the most reliable character actors of his generation. He played Hannibal Lecktor in Michael Mann’s Manhunter, years before the character became more widely associated with Anthony Hopkins. Later credits included Braveheart, The Boxer, Rushmore, L.I.E., The Rookie, Adaptation, X2, Troy, Match Point, Zodiac, Red, Coriolanus and Churchill. In Adaptation, his performance as screenwriting teacher Robert McKee turned an industry lecture into a comic set piece; in X2, his William Stryker gave the superhero film a hard military antagonist; in L.I.E., he earned Independent Spirit Award attention for a disturbing and complex lead role.
