Acting
Mary Rose Byrne is an Australian actress whose career has moved steadily between Australian film and television, Hollywood studio pictures, independent drama, comedy, horror, and stage work. Born in Sydney on 24 July 1979, she began acting as a teenager and made her screen debut in the 1994 film Dallas Doll. Her early career included Australian screen roles that established her as a versatile performer before she reached wider international notice with The Goddess of 1967, for which she won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival.
Byrne's transition into larger international productions came through a mix of supporting and leading parts. She appeared in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, then worked across historical drama, science fiction, and horror in films such as Troy, Marie Antoinette, Sunshine, 28 Weeks Later, Knowing, and the Insidious series. In Insidious and its sequels she played Renai Lambert, helping anchor one of the major supernatural-horror franchises of the 2010s and returning to the role in Insidious: The Red Door.
Comedy became one of Byrne's defining strengths. After Get Him to the Greek, she gained broad mainstream recognition as Helen Harris III in Bridesmaids, a performance that helped show how precisely she could play polished, competitive characters without losing comic timing. She followed with prominent roles in Neighbors, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Spy, I Give It a Year, Instant Family, Like a Boss, and the Peter Rabbit films, often balancing dry wit with a grounded dramatic presence.

On television, Byrne earned major attention as Ellen Parsons opposite Glenn Close in Damages. The role brought her two Primetime Emmy nominations and placed her in one of the signature legal thrillers of late-2000s prestige television. She later portrayed Gloria Steinem in Mrs. America and led the Apple TV+ comedy-drama Physical as Sheila Rubin, a San Diego housewife who builds a life around the 1980s aerobics boom. She also co-starred with Seth Rogen in Platonic, extending her work in character-driven television comedy.
Byrne has also maintained a stage career. She appeared on Broadway in You Can't Take It with You and in other theatre productions, bringing the same mix of precision and ease that marks her screen work. Her later film work includes Juliet, Naked, The Meddler, I Am Mother, and If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, a psychological drama that brought renewed awards attention. Across genres, Byrne's career is notable for its lack of a single lane: she can play elegant antagonists, anxious parents, comic foils, romantic leads, and dramatic protagonists without seeming misplaced.
