After Twilight, Stewart increasingly emphasized independent and director-driven work. In Olivier Assayas's Clouds of Sils Maria, she played Valentine, the sharp, restless assistant to an established actor played by Juliette Binoche. The performance won Stewart the César Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her the first American performer to win an acting César. She reteamed with Assayas for Personal Shopper, a supernatural drama centered on grief, identity and mediated communication. Stewart also appeared in Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, Certain Women, Café Society, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and Seberg, building a post-franchise career that favored riskier, smaller-scale projects over straightforward studio-star vehicles.

Stewart has still worked in mainstream films, including Snow White and the Huntsman, Charlie's Angels, Underwater and Happiest Season, but her most acclaimed twenty-first-century role after Twilight came in Pablo Larraín's Spencer. Playing Diana, Princess of Wales, Stewart avoided simple impersonation and instead portrayed a woman under psychological and institutional pressure during a fictionalized Christmas holiday with the royal family. The performance brought nominations from major awards bodies, including the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes, and it confirmed her standing as a performer capable of carrying demanding biographical drama.

Her work behind the camera has grown alongside her acting. Stewart directed the short film Come Swim, which screened at Sundance and Cannes-related programs, and went on to make her feature directorial debut with The Chronology of Water, an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch's memoir. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Stewart's career is unusual because the global fame of Twilight could easily have defined her permanently, yet she used that visibility to pursue a broader, more idiosyncratic body of work.
