Toni Collette

Television gave Collette some of her most visible later roles. In Showtime's United States of Tara, she played Tara Gregson, a suburban wife and mother living with dissociative identity disorder. The role required quick shifts in voice, posture, and emotional temperature, and it won her a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. She later earned further acclaim for Unbelievable, in which she played Detective Grace Rasmussen, one of the investigators reexamining a mishandled sexual-assault case. The miniseries demonstrated Collette's ability to project empathy and procedural intelligence without turning the character into a sentimental hero. She also appeared in The Staircase, adding another true-crime drama to a résumé that had become unusually varied across television formats.

Collette's reputation for fearless acting was reinforced by Ari Aster's Hereditary in 2018. As Annie Graham, an artist and mother trapped in grief, family resentment, and supernatural terror, she delivered a performance widely discussed for its emotional extremity. The film became a modern horror landmark, and Collette's work was central to its effect: she made the horror inseparable from bereavement and domestic collapse. Beyond acting, Collette has recorded and performed music with Toni Collette & the Finish, whose album Beautiful Awkward Pictures was released in 2006. She has also worked as a producer, including through Vocab Films, a company she co-founded. Her career is notable for its resistance to easy categorization: she has been a leading lady, comic performer, horror icon, prestige-television anchor, stage performer, and ensemble specialist. Across those roles, her defining quality is emotional specificity. Whether playing Muriel's yearning for escape, Lynn Sear's maternal fear, Tara Gregson's fractured identity, or Annie Graham's grief, Collette tends to locate the human pressure underneath genre and plot.
