Ciarán Hinds

Ciarán Hinds is an Irish actor known for a long career across theatre, film, television, and voice work. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 9 February 1953, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and emerged from a classical stage background before becoming a familiar screen presence. His early career included extensive theatre work, including major roles with companies such as Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the National Theatre. That grounding gave him the authority, voice, and emotional control that later defined many of his screen performances.

Hinds became widely recognized for roles that carried weight even when they were not the formal center of a story. In film, he appeared in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Persuasion, Oscar and Lucinda, Road to Perdition, The Sum of All Fears, Munich, Amazing Grace, There Will Be Blood, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Directors often used him for characters with institutional power, moral conflict, or private grief, and his deep voice and stillness made him especially effective in historical dramas, thrillers, and literary adaptations.

Television brought Hinds to several generations of viewers. He played Julius Caesar in HBO’s Rome, a role that matched his theatrical command with the series’ political sweep.
