Mark Strong

Mark Strong is an English actor known for commanding screen villains, intense stage work, and a long run of prestige television and film roles. Born Marco Giuseppe Salussolia in London in 1963, he trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after studying at Royal Holloway. His career developed first through British television and theatre, then widened into international film, where his voice, stillness, and controlled physical presence made him a natural fit for spies, gangsters, aristocrats, generals, and dangerous men.

Strong’s early breakthrough came on British television with Our Friends in the North, the landmark 1996 drama in which he played Terry “Tosker” Cox. The series helped launch or consolidate several major careers and showed Strong’s ability to play ambition, resentment, and vulnerability over a long social and political canvas. He continued to work across stage and screen before becoming increasingly visible in films such as Oliver Twist, Syriana, Sunshine, Stardust, Body of Lies, RocknRolla, and Sherlock Holmes.

By the 2010s, Strong had become one of the most recognizable supporting actors in British and American genre cinema. He played Frank D’Amico in Kick-Ass, Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes, Jim Prideaux in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a senior intelligence figure in Zero Dark Thirty, and Stewart Menzies in The Imitation Game. He also entered major franchises as Merlin in Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle and as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. These roles often used his severity, but the best of them also used his dry humor and loyalty.
