Biography

Wakana Yamazaki was a Japanese actress, voice actress and narrator best known internationally as the long-running voice of Ran Mouri in Detective Conan. Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, and educated at Doshisha University and Aoni Juku Osaka, she became associated with Aoni Production and built a career that spanned television animation, feature animation, games, narration and live-action voice work. Her profile combined the range expected of a working Japanese voice actor with the unusual continuity of one signature role: Ran Mouri, the karate-trained heroine and emotional anchor of the Case Closed and Detective Conan franchise.

Yamazaki entered professional voice acting in the early 1990s and quickly accumulated credits across children's animation, fantasy, comedy and action series. Her early and mid-career work included roles in Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Sailor Moon R, Marmalade Boy, Neighborhood Story, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Dragon Ball GT, GeGeGe no Kitaro, The Kindaichi Case Files, Trigun and Himitsu no Akko-chan. The breadth of those assignments shows how often she moved between supporting characters, guest roles and recurring parts before the Detective Conan role became central to her public identity.

Detective Conan began on television in 1996, and Yamazaki's performance as Ran Mouri became one of the franchise's defining sounds. Ran is both Shinichi Kudo's childhood friend and a lead character in her own right, and the role required Yamazaki to play everyday warmth, comedy, worry, physical confidence and moments of melodrama across hundreds of episodes, specials, games and theatrical films. She reprised Ran in the annual Detective Conan film series from The Time-Bombed Skyscraper through later entries such as Black Iron Submarine, The Million-Dollar Pentagram and One-Eyed Flashback, giving the character continuity across decades of changing animation styles and audiences.
