During the same period, Hawke built a varied résumé that included Gattaca, Great Expectations, Hamlet, and Training Day. His performance as rookie police officer Jake Hoyt opposite Denzel Washington in Training Day earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. He later received another supporting-actor Oscar nomination for Linklater's Boyhood, an unusually ambitious project filmed over twelve years. In Boyhood, Hawke played Mason Evans Sr., a divorced father whose growth is seen in fragments across his son's childhood; the role drew praise for its warmth, looseness, and cumulative emotional detail.

Hawke has also maintained a strong stage career. His best-known work includes Dead Poets Society, Reality Bites, the Before trilogy, Training Day, Boyhood, First Reformed, The Good Lord Bird, and the films he has directed, making him one of the more versatile American actors to emerge from his generation.
