David Tennant is a Scottish actor whose career has moved confidently between classical theatre, British television, international genre franchises, comedy, animation, and audio performance. Born David John McDonald in Bathgate, West Lothian, he trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and adopted the professional surname Tennant because another David McDonald was already registered with the actors’ union. That practical change became attached to one of the most recognizable acting careers in modern British popular culture.
Tennant first built his reputation through theatre and television work in Scotland and across the United Kingdom. His stage background remained central even after he became internationally famous: he has repeatedly returned to Shakespeare and other major classical roles, including acclaimed Royal Shakespeare Company work as Hamlet and Berowne in Love’s Labour’s Lost. His theatrical appeal rests on speed, clarity, physical energy, and an ability to move between comic volatility and emotional intensity without making either feel forced.
His defining screen breakthrough came with Doctor Who. Tennant played the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010, helping turn the revived BBC series into a global phenomenon. His Doctor was exuberant, witty, romantic, lonely, and sometimes frighteningly severe, a combination that made the role accessible to new viewers while satisfying long-time fans. He later returned to the franchise as the Fourteenth Doctor for the programme’s 60th anniversary specials, a rare return that underlined how strongly his performance had become identified with the show’s modern era.

Outside Doctor Who, Tennant has avoided being limited to one heroic persona. He played Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, DI Alec Hardy in the crime drama Broadchurch, Kilgrave in Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and Crowley in Good Omens. These roles show the breadth of his screen identity: he can carry a procedural as a damaged investigator, animate fantasy as a sardonic demon, or make a villain both charismatic and deeply unsettling. Broadchurch especially demonstrated his ability to underplay, using stillness and reserve in contrast to the kinetic style many viewers knew from Doctor Who.
Tennant has also become a prolific voice actor and narrator, appearing in animation, documentaries, radio drama, audiobooks, and podcasts. His voice work includes projects such as DuckTales, Star Wars animation, How to Train Your Dragon-related productions, and numerous Doctor Who audio stories. That side of his career reflects a technical command of rhythm and character that suits both children’s entertainment and more literary narration.
Across stage and screen, Tennant’s career is marked by unusual durability. He has remained popular with family audiences, genre fans, theatre audiences, and prestige television viewers at the same time. Rather than treating popular success and serious acting as separate lanes, he has moved between them freely: Shakespeare one year, superhero television the next, a children’s animation or a dark police drama soon after. That range is the reason he is often described not simply as a former Doctor, but as one of the most versatile British actors of his generation.
