Antonio Banderas

The mid-to-late 1990s made Banderas a full Hollywood star. In Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado, he played El Mariachi, turning the wandering gunman into an icon of stylized action cinema. In The Mask of Zorro, he played Alejandro Murrieta opposite Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones, bringing athleticism, humor, and romantic swagger to one of his most popular roles. He returned to both worlds later in Once Upon a Time in Mexico and The Legend of Zorro.

Banderas also became known to family audiences through Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids films, in which he played Gregorio Cortez, and through animation, most famously as the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise and its spin-offs. The role used his comic timing and musicality while turning his romantic-adventure persona into a playful animated archetype. Puss in Boots became one of his most globally recognized performances, introducing his voice and personality to younger generations.

Although often associated with movie-star charm, Banderas has repeatedly returned to more demanding dramatic work. His collaborations with Almodóvar resumed with The Skin I Live In and reached a career peak with Pain and Glory, in which he played Salvador Mallo, an aging filmmaker reflecting on memory, illness, desire, art, and regret. The performance won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor and the Goya Award for Best Actor, and it brought Banderas his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

His career also extends to stage and television. On Broadway, he starred in the 2003 revival of Nine and earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. On television, he received Emmy recognition for And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself and Genius: Picasso, the latter casting him as Pablo Picasso. In Spain, he has invested heavily in theatre in Málaga, including the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank project, reinforcing his connection to his home city and to live performance.

Banderas has directed films including Crazy in Alabama and Summer Rain, and his broader public career includes business, philanthropy, fashion-related work, and cultural ambassadorship for Málaga. His lasting importance comes from the unusual breadth of his career: he is at once an Almodóvar actor, an action star, a romantic lead, a comic voice performer, a stage musical performer, and a Spanish cultural figure who successfully crossed linguistic and industrial borders without abandoning his origins.
