Biography
Salma Hayek Pinault is a Mexican and American actress, producer and director whose career helped widen the international profile of Latin American performers in Hollywood. She was born Salma Valgarma Hayek Jiménez in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico, on 2 September 1966. After early study in Mexico and the United States, she became a major television star in Mexico through the telenovela Teresa before leaving for Los Angeles to pursue English-language film work.
Hayek's move to Hollywood required rebuilding her career in an industry that offered limited roles to Latina actresses. Her breakthrough came when Robert Rodriguez cast her opposite Antonio Banderas in Desperado. She became associated with Rodriguez's energetic 1990s filmmaking through Desperado, Four Rooms, From Dusk till Dawn, The Faculty and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. These films made her internationally recognizable, but they also showed the narrowness of the opportunities she was often given: glamorous, dangerous, comic or exoticized characters rather than fully centered dramatic leads.
Hayek answered that limitation by producing her own defining project. Frida, released in 2002, was a biographical drama about Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, with Hayek starring and producing. The film was a long-gestating passion project, and it became a turning point in her career. Hayek received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as well as Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild nominations, making her one of the first Mexican actresses to reach that level of Oscar recognition in a leading role. The film also won Academy Awards for original score and makeup.
