Biography
Olivia Colman is an English actress celebrated for moving with unusual ease between comedy, drama, film, television, and voice work. Born Sarah Caroline Colman on January 30, 1974, in Norwich, Norfolk, she trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after early studies and performing experience in Cambridge. She adopted the professional name Olivia Colman because another performer was already registered under her birth name, and she soon became known for a screen presence that could be warm, awkward, sharp, and devastating in the same performance.
Colman's early public recognition came through British television comedy. She broke through as Sophie Chapman in the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show, playing opposite David Mitchell and Robert Webb, and became a regular face in programs such as Green Wing, That Mitchell and Webb Look, Beautiful People, Rev., Twenty Twelve, and Flowers. Those roles established her gift for naturalistic comic timing: she could make embarrassment, exasperation, kindness, or quiet fury land with minimal fuss. Her comedy work also helped make her later dramatic turns feel especially surprising to audiences who first knew her as a sitcom performer.
Her dramatic reputation grew substantially in the 2010s. In Paddy Considine's film Tyrannosaur, she gave a powerful performance as Hannah, a charity-shop worker whose apparent gentleness conceals suffering and resilience. On television, she played Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller in Broadchurch, a role that brought her major acclaim and a BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress. She also appeared in The Night Manager, earning a Golden Globe Award, and in Fleabag as the protagonist's passive-aggressive godmother, a performance that became one of the show's most memorable supporting turns.
