Mark Wahlberg is an American actor, producer and former recording artist whose career moved from pop music and modeling into major film stardom. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 5 June 1971, Wahlberg first became nationally known in the early 1990s as Marky Mark, frontman of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. The group's hit single Good Vibrations and Wahlberg's high-profile modeling work made him a pop-culture figure before he redirected his career toward acting.
Wahlberg's early film roles included Renaissance Man and The Basketball Diaries, but his breakthrough as a serious actor came with Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights in 1997. Playing Eddie Adams, a young performer who becomes the adult-film star Dirk Diggler, Wahlberg carried a large ensemble drama and showed a vulnerability and screen confidence that changed how he was perceived. The role opened the door to a broader film career in drama, thrillers, comedy and action.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Wahlberg built momentum through Three Kings, The Perfect Storm, Planet of the Apes, Rock Star and The Italian Job. These films established him as a leading man able to work in studio action films as well as director-driven ensemble pieces. His collaborations with major filmmakers continued with I Heart Huckabees and Martin Scorsese's The Departed. In The Departed, Wahlberg played sharp-tongued police sergeant Sean Dignam, a supporting performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Wahlberg's range widened through sports drama, crime stories and comedy. He starred in Invincible, Shooter, We Own the Night, Max Payne and The Lovely Bones, then played boxer Micky Ward in The Fighter. The Fighter, which Wahlberg also produced, became one of the most important films of his career: it earned multiple Academy Award nominations and won acting Oscars for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. Wahlberg's producer credit on the film brought him an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Commercially, Wahlberg became closely associated with action comedies and broad studio entertainment. He starred in The Other Guys with Will Ferrell, Ted and Ted 2 with Seth MacFarlane's title character, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day and the Transformers films Age of Extinction and The Last Knight. Several of these projects drew on real incidents or blue-collar hero narratives, a recurring lane in his later screen persona. He has also continued to make family and comedy projects, including Instant Family, The Family Plan and The Union.
As a producer, Wahlberg has had a substantial television and film footprint. He was an executive producer on the HBO series Entourage, which was partly inspired by the ecosystem around his own early Hollywood years, and on Boardwalk Empire. His production work has helped keep him active beyond acting and has contributed to his public image as an actor-businessman. He has also been involved in restaurant, fitness and other commercial ventures, though his film and television credits remain the center of his entertainment career.
Wahlberg's career is notable for its unusual reinvention. He moved from teen music celebrity to model, then into respected dramatic work, then to durable star and producer. Public film databases and awards records list credits across more than three decades, from Boogie Nights and The Departed to The Fighter, Ted, Transformers and recent streaming releases. His best performances often use a direct, tightly wound energy, whether in crime drama, working-class sports stories, or action comedy.
