Biography

Laura Dern is an American actress and producer whose career spans independent film, Hollywood blockbusters, prestige television, and award-winning character work. Born Laura Elizabeth Dern on February 10, 1967, in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. Because she grew up close to film sets and performers, acting was both family inheritance and chosen craft. Her early appearances included small roles connected to her mother's work, but by the mid-1980s she had established herself as a distinctive performer in her own right.

Dern's breakthrough period showed her appetite for complicated material. She drew attention in Mask and Smooth Talk, then became closely associated with David Lynch through Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. In those films she projected innocence, curiosity, fear, and danger without reducing her characters to symbols. Her collaboration with Lynch became one of the defining artistic relationships of her career, continuing years later with Inland Empire and Twin Peaks: The Return.

In 1991 Dern starred opposite her mother in Rambling Rose, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, while Diane Ladd was nominated for supporting actress. That rare mother-daughter recognition underlined both Dern's family lineage and her individual seriousness. She soon reached a global audience as paleobotanist Ellie Sattler in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. The role became one of popular cinema's most recognizable scientist-heroes, and Dern later returned to the character in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.
