Chris Rock

Chris Rock is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer and director whose stand-up comedy helped define a generation of American social satire. Born Christopher Julius Rock on February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina, he was raised primarily in Brooklyn, New York. He began performing stand-up in the 1980s and developed a sharp, rhythmically forceful style built around race, politics, class, relationships and popular culture. Eddie Murphy became an early supporter, and Rock's small role in Beverly Hills Cop II was one of his first film appearances.

Rock gained national visibility as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1993, part of a group that also included Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, David Spade and Rob Schneider. His SNL period gave him a television platform, but his long-term identity was forged more strongly through stand-up. The 1996 HBO special Bring the Pain transformed his career, presenting him as a major comic voice with material that was aggressive, analytical and tightly structured. Later specials including Bigger & Blacker, Never Scared, Kill the Messenger, Tamborine and Selective Outrage extended that reputation. His comedy albums and specials earned major industry recognition, including Grammy Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards.

As an actor, Rock has moved between comedy, drama and voice performance. His film work includes New Jack City, Boomerang, CB4, Dogma, Nurse Betty, Down to Earth, Head of State, The Longest Yard, I Think I Love My Wife, Death at a Funeral, Top Five, Spiral and the Grown Ups films. For family audiences, he is widely known as the voice of Marty the zebra in the Madagascar franchise, a role that brought his fast, high-energy delivery to global animated hits. He also appeared in television drama, including the fourth season of Fargo, where he played crime boss Loy Cannon.
