Benicio del Toro

In the 2000s and 2010s, del Toro balanced prestige films, genre roles, and franchise appearances. He portrayed Che Guevara in Soderbergh's two-part Che, a demanding lead performance that won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor. He later appeared in Sin City, The Wolfman, Savages, Inherent Vice, and Sicario, with Sicario giving him one of his signature modern roles as Alejandro Gillick. In that film and its sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado, del Toro's quiet menace and grief-driven severity helped define the series' tone. His franchise work includes the Collector in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DJ in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, while voice and family-film credits include The Little Prince and Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

Del Toro has also taken on television work selectively. His portrayal of Richard Matt in Escape at Dannemora earned major award attention, including a Primetime Emmy nomination, and showed the same interest in morally complicated figures that runs through much of his filmography. Later roles in No Sudden Move, Reptile, The French Dispatch, and The Phoenician Scheme continued a career built less on celebrity persona than on carefully weighted screen presence. Across crime films, historical drama, black comedy, and large-scale franchises, del Toro has remained recognizable for his patience as an actor: he often lets scenes come to him, creating characters who seem to carry histories beyond the dialogue.
