Anthony Hopkins

The 1990s also showed that Hopkins could not be reduced to that one character. He earned Oscar nominations for The Remains of the Day, Nixon, and Amistad, playing a repressed English butler, an American president, and former U.S. president John Quincy Adams with markedly different registers. He appeared in Howards End, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Shadowlands, Legends of the Fall, Meet Joe Black, and The Mask of Zorro. These films helped define him as an actor equally at home in literary adaptation, historical drama, romance, horror, and adventure.

In later decades Hopkins moved fluidly between prestige drama, television, and franchise filmmaking. He played Odin in the Marvel films Thor, Thor: The Dark World, and Thor: Ragnarok, appeared in Transformers: The Last Knight, and took roles in films such as Fracture, Hitchcock, Noah, Solace, The Two Popes, and One Life. On television he reached a new audience as Dr. Robert Ford in HBO's Westworld, a role that used his gift for calm authority and philosophical menace. He also continued to write music and paint, public aspects of a creative life not limited to acting.

Hopkins won a second Academy Award for Best Actor for The Father, released in 2020, in which he played an elderly man experiencing dementia. The performance was widely praised for its vulnerability, confusion, anger, charm, and fear, and it made him the oldest winner of the Best Actor Oscar at the time. The role stood in contrast to Hannibal Lecter: instead of terrifying control, Hopkins portrayed the terror of losing control. Together, those performances show the range that has sustained his reputation.

Hopkins was knighted in 1993 for services to the arts, received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2008, and has been honored by the Golden Globes, BAFTA, the Academy, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His career is often associated with intensity, but its deeper quality is musical control: pauses, rhythm, sudden changes in volume, and the ability to make stillness dramatic. From Shakespearean theatre to modern cinema, he has remained one of the defining actors of British and Welsh screen history.
