John Leguizamo

John Leguizamo is a Colombian-born American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and stage performer known for combining character comedy with pointed commentary on Latino identity and representation. Born in Bogotá in 1960 and raised largely in Queens, New York, he began in stand-up comedy and downtown theater before becoming a familiar face in film and television. His work has often drawn from immigrant life, class pressure, family conflict, and the experience of being a Latino performer in industries that long offered limited roles.

Leguizamo started performing comedy in New York clubs in the 1980s and developed a style built on rapid physical transformation, multiple voices, and autobiographical observation. His early screen appearances included Miami Vice, Casualties of War, Die Hard 2, and Hangin’ with the Homeboys. In the early 1990s he gained wider attention through Super Mario Bros. and Carlito’s Way, then earned strong notices for playing Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. That role brought a Golden Globe nomination and showed his ability to turn a flamboyant comic part into a sympathetic character.

The stage has been central to Leguizamo’s career. His one-man and semi-autobiographical shows, including Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, Freak, Sexaholix, Ghetto Klown, and Latin History for Morons, made him one of the most prominent Latino solo performers in American theater. Freak was filmed for television and won him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. Latin History for Morons, which examined the absence of Latino stories in standard history education, earned Tony Award recognition, and Leguizamo received a Special Tony Award in 2018.
