Carey Mulligan

Carey Mulligan is an English actress whose screen and stage work has often centered on sharply observed, emotionally contained performances. Born in London in 1985, she spent part of her childhood in Germany before returning to England, where she was educated at Woldingham School. She did not come through a conventional drama-school route; after repeated rejections from formal training programs, she found an early opening through a connection made after a school visit by Julian Fellowes. That led to auditions for Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice, in which she made her film debut as Kitty Bennet in 2005.

Mulligan quickly built a career across British television, theatre, and film. Her early television credits included the BBC adaptation of Bleak House and Northanger Abbey, while her stage work included Forty Winks at the Royal Court and a Broadway appearance as Nina in The Seagull. Her international breakthrough came with An Education, where her performance as Jenny Mellor, a bright schoolgirl drawn into an adult world, earned major awards attention and established her as one of the leading British actors of her generation.

After An Education, Mulligan avoided being tied to one kind of prestige role. She appeared in Never Let Me Go, Drive, Shame, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Far from the Madding Crowd, Suffragette, Mudbound, Wildlife, and She Said. Those films showed a range that moved between literary adaptation, contemporary drama, stylized genre cinema, and historical ensemble work. She received further Academy Award nominations for Promising Young Woman, in which she played Cassandra, a woman pursuing a private reckoning with sexual violence and complicity, and for Maestro, in which she portrayed Felicia Montealegre opposite Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein.
