Sir Patrick Stewart is an English actor known for a long career in classical theatre, television, film, and voice performance. He was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Stewart developed an interest in performance while at school and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after early work in local theatre and journalism. His early professional life was shaped by repertory theatre, and in 1966 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he became a major classical actor over the following decades.
Stewart's theatre career included extensive Shakespearean work and West End and Broadway appearances. With the Royal Shakespeare Company he performed in many productions, building a reputation for command of verse, vocal authority, and emotional restraint. He won a Laurence Olivier Award for Antony and Cleopatra and later received further recognition for Hamlet, in which he played Claudius opposite David Tennant. His theatre work has remained central to his identity even as his screen career brought him international fame.
Stewart became widely known to global audiences as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994. The role turned him into one of the most recognizable figures in science fiction television and led to appearances in Star Trek feature films and the later series Star Trek: Picard. Picard's combination of discipline, diplomacy, and moral seriousness drew strongly on Stewart's classical training and became a defining part of the Star Trek franchise.
